My new puppy has a sore on neck after vaccination. Should I worry?

I bought a rottweiler puppy yesterday and today found what felt like a scab under her fur on the back of her neck. When I pulled it, the fur/scab came off and revealed a sore. I know she recently had a vaccination shot. Should I be concerned?

I'd just keep an eye on the area for now. Clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and Sweetheart will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

That heavy discharge generally indicates infection. Your pup will heal the fastest if he goes in to see his doctor. The doctor may give him a systemic antibiotic or may only give him topicals if the lesion is very small. Sometimes these pets can be itchy as well and will get medication for that too. You definitely want to make sure that he cannot itch or lick at that area as it will make it worse. The doctor will also shave the hair as it needs to be exposed to the air to dry up. You're right it is hard to tell from the photos. I think it looks more like mange. The unfortunate thing is that many skin issues look similar so it is often difficult to tell exactly what it is just by looking at it. I can say that I have not had a vaccine reaction look that way so I think that is less likely. Also, vets don't usually use the back of the neck for vaccinating anymore - are you sure the vaccine was given there? I don't think it's an emergency. I would recommend putting some Neosporin on it for now and then just bring it up at the next vet exam. He should be due for booster vaccines in a few weeks. If it starts looking worse or it is bothering him then I would take him in to see the vet sooner. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I have a Dalmatian pup 45 days old. Today I gave the first vaccine around 2 hours back, that part swelled up little bit and he's crying if anything gets touch with that part
No worries. Pets are normally sore for the first 24 hrs following vaccinations. Just avoid touching the area and do a cold compress for 5 mins if tolerated. And the swelling (if a small bump) is the vaccine contents under the skin, this will go down gradually within the next couple of weeks.

My dog has an oozing sore on the back of her neck. I don't see any redness but it may just be because her hair is longer. She is a pit/lab mix. She is acting normal, though. How do I clean it and should I be worried?
Poor Stella! I would gently clean it with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep her from scratching at it, you can put an Ecollar on her. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! I understand your worry! I am glad they areas are healing! I don't think you to need to worry if the aloe is helping. I don't think the vaccines were the cause. It sounds more like a skin infection or hot spots that once the hair was shaved down were able to dry out. Keep monitoring the spot and if they come back or don't resolve let your Vet know!

How can I tell if Coco has a Infection where he got his Vaccine
At the site where the vaccine was given, you may see swelling, it may be red, the area would be quite warm to the touch, and there may be pus. In order to confirm if he has an infection there, Coco will need to see the vet.

I have a small 3.2 lb chihuahua who received his puppy 2 vaccines today. He has a lump the size of a large gumball and cries when he is touched or moved What can I do for pain and swelling?
Poor Rocky. A lump at the vaccination site, as well as some soreness and tiredness, are normal after getting a vaccine. If Rocky will let you, you can try holding a warm compress (such as a washcloth soaked in warm water and then wrung out) against the sore area for a few minutes 1-2 times daily until he seems to be feeling better. Usually, most pups are back to normal within a few days :)

This could be a skin reaction to a sting or bite, or a cyst or a little abscess or in fact a small tumor or wart. I suggest you observe the spot weekly, and if it changes in size or color or if it starts to hurt or the skin around it turns red, then you should have it examined by your veterinarian. If it stays the same or gets smaller, then it is likely nothing you have to worry about and you can show it to your vet the during the next routine visit.

We have a 3 year old Golden Retriever who has a crusty sore on his neck. It started out soft and over a couple of months it started to get hard on top. Now it sort of looks like a wart. Is this something we should be worried about?
Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a localized persistent spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. This is a common location for a vaccine to be given. Has he recently had puppy vaccines? If so, this is likely just a local reaction and no big deal. You can keep watching it. If he hasn’t had shots recently or if you don’t think a vaccine was given there or if it is growing, I would have your vet take a look at it before his next set of shots. Your vet will be able to do a cytology if needed and determine the type of mass it is. I hope this helps!
