My kitten has a worm coming out. What should I do before seeing a vet?

my new kitten appears to have a parasite (worm) coming out of it's anus. what do I do now since I can't get to a vet until tomorrow?

I would put on a pair of gloves, and use a paper towel to remove the worm. Wash your hands thoroughly after that. Use good hygiene around her, and have Pixar seen by a vet in the morning. The vet can treat her for worms. You may want to contain her to one room with a litter box, food, and water for the night. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! She likely vomited due to the worms however there are other possible reasons. The first thing is determining the specific type of worm that is affecting her so that therapy can be recommended based on that. Walmart does not have any available safe therapy to be used for undiagnosed worms causing vomiting. I recommend you visit a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to diagnose the specific cause of the vomiting and recommend accordingly. Best of luck!

You can go to any pet store or even wal mart to get a dewormer for cats. Make sure it contains praziquantel as this covers tapeworms also. You can also get a feline probiotic to start mixing in the food to help with the diarrhea. Try to get him to keep water or chicken broth or tuna juice in him to help him stay hydrated until you can take him to. Avet in Monday for further care

While there are different types of deworming medications available over the counter you would need to know what type of intestinal parasites your kitten has to choose the appropriate one, and that would most likely require a fecal analysis with your veterinarian. If your kitten is eating and drinking normally and seems active I would wait until your appointment. Your kitten has probably had the worms since birth! Most intestinal parasites are transmitted through stool so you should isolate the new kitten from the adult cat and give them separate litter pans.

Hi. Poor sprinkles. I would recommend waiting for a medication from the veterinarian. The medications coming from the veterinarian will work a lot better than over the counter medications in addition to getting a correct diagnosis. I would however try to get in somewhere tomorrow. Good luck

Hi, all kittens need to be wormed regularly, and depending on the amount of parasites in the environment, worming should continue throughout their whole life time. I would recommend you have her checked over so that worming can be prescribed, as well as vaccinations started. Hope this helps !

Well, I think the safest plan would be to have him seen by your veterinarian. My concern with would be if he is vomiting then he may have an obstruction from a large mass of worms. My other concern would be that if he is vomiting he may not hold down the medication to clear the parasites. I would also recommend you take one of the worms with you to the veterinarian to determine what type of worm it is so they can prescribe the most effective treatment. It’s probably a type of roundworm. You can use a dewormer form the pet store but I would also schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure there aren’t any other intestinal parasites that the OTC dewormers won’t cover. I would also go ahead and deworm your other pets. All of them need to be re-treated in 3-4 weeks to completely rid the worms.

It sounds like poor Piggy is sick, and it could be due to the worms, a GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. When a kitten is vomiting a lot, is dehydrated, and feels like it has a fever, this is a medical emergency that requires immediate vet care. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. Yes, although it is gross, he should be fine until you can see your veterinarian. If you can, save the vomit for your vet to confirm roundworm infection. Do not offer any food to your cat tonight. A small bowl of water or unflavored PediaLyte can be left out.

It sounds like Boots may have intestinal parasites. There are many different kinds, but we usually lump them into 3 groups: round/hook/whip worms look like spaghetti, tapeworms look like flat noodles or small grains of rice, and coccidia or giardia are other types that are not visibly seen. You can try an OTC dewormer that treats the specific type of worm you are seeing and make sure it is repeated in a few weeks as directed on the label, but I recommend that Boots go to a vet. She is way overdue for kitten vaccines and a rabies shot (which is required in all cats and dogs by law - even if they will never ever step foot outside). There are many nasty cat viruses that can cause illness and even death. Your vet can also test a fecal sample to determine the most appropriate treatment timeline for her individual parasite(s).
