My dog has a red swollen lump. Is it serious or will it go away?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 4 lbs

Hello I just noticed red swollen lump on my little Yorkshire. He’s been at it all day. He doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms just the lump. It looks like someone bit him, but I’m not too sure. I wonder if it’s something that goes away on its own or if I should go to the vet clinic? Thank you

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Philly. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. The lump is bothering him if he is trying to get to it. It appears large and quite swollen. It is difficult to see from the photos, but it looks like there is an open area in the middle. If so, this could be a breathing hole for a fly larva known as a cuterebra. If not, he could have an infection or even skin cancer. The veterinarian will examine him and determine how best to treat him. In the meantime, place an E-collar on him if he is licking at it. I hope this information helps!
