My dog has a paw cut and won't stop licking it. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 4 years old | 70 lbs

My dog has been licking her paw since Tuesday. I saw yesterday on Wednesday she had a cut in it, almost like a blister. I just started putting neosporin on it yesterday and wrapped her paw being she keeps licking it.

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.

Although disinfection can be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths and buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching, a check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to definitively solve the problem.
