What causes my guinea pig's ears to be flaky, crusty, and dry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Guinea Pig | Male | 1 month and 17 days old

We were blessed with lil Chorizo almost 3wks ago in a crowded pet store bin.He is young & itty bitty. He has taken to my daughter and I extremely well & loves to lay down & sleep on us, purring. Head over heals for him! This past week I noticed some flaky?, scaly, dry/crusting in/outside of his right ear. Thought it was tomato mess 1st as it did clean out easily w a sensitive wipe but it’s back now. He still popcorns, talks a lot, Vit C tabs, seems super happy. Plz help

Thanks for reaching out about Chorizo and including photos. Common causes of dermatitis in guinea pigs are fungal infections (ringworm), mites and bacterial infections. This is likely ringworm, which is possible contagious to people. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Good luck.
