My old dog has diarrhea & bleeding. Can I give her Cipro at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 13 years and 10 months old | 9 lbs

My 14 year old dog has diarrhea and rectal bleeding. I have tried rice and banana. No luck. She weighs 9 lbs. I have ciproflaxicin at home. Can I cut one in pieces and administer to my dog? I am 76 years old and too sick to go to the vet. Help.

No, unfortunately we can't recommend giving a prescription medication without an in-person exam, and without knowing the cause of Molly's diarrhea, it would be hard to say if this is even the right treatment plan. If she is bleeding in addition to the diarrhea, it is possible there is irritation in the lower GI tract, an issue such as parasites, underlying illness, allergies, foreign bodies, and more, all of which would have different treatments than giving an antibiotic. If you can, seeing if a family member can bring Molly to the vet for you, or seeing if there is a veterinary housecall service in your area that can come to you is best. Some local animal shelters also offer programs to help with veterinary assistance in these cases. Keeping Molly on a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken without any extra treats may also help minimize the GI upset until the true cause is found.
