My dog has a bump on her bum near anus, but it's not anal glands?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 16 lbs

What’s this bump on my dogs bum? It’s near her anus but I don’t think it’s close enough to be an issue with her anal glands. She had them expressed about 2 months ago. No scooting, licking or issues pooping or peeing. All updated on shots and is on monthly heart worm/flea/tick prevention. Last physical was in May with no issues. She doesn’t even notice it. Please excuse the little poop on her bum.

Hello. You are correct, this is nowhere near Lea's anal glands. What I can not discern is if this is a small tumor or an area of local irritation. It might be best to have your veterinarian take a close look to make sure this is not something that requires immediate action or treatment. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

This may be normal for her or it may be a small mass or local irritation. You can monitor it for rapid change or growth then see your veterinarian if indicated or you can schedule an appointment sooner for a physical exam. It is a very sensitive area, so sedation may be required if your vet recommends a fine needle aspirate. This will allow collection of a sample of the lump to send out for pathology. This may provide a definitive diagnosis. Any treatment may depend on that diagnosis.

I would not be overly worried about that bump at this stage. It is probably a benign cyst. Just keep watching it and if it changes significantly in size, shape or color then have your vet check it out. If it stays the same, just have your vet check it at her next yearly exam. Thank you for the photo!
