Pet dragging legs, vet suggests neurologist. Is it life-threatening?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Male | neutered | 5 months old | 10 lbs

So I asked a question earlier ( I inserted a picture) and I talked to my vet about bringing him to a neurologist... they said itd be several thousand dollars. I know there isn’t much info... but is there any way anyone could tell if this is something life threatening or if it just affects the way he walks... I don’t have the money to spend several thousand dollars but I want to make sure I’m not doing anything to hurt him by not bringing him in. There aren’t really any signs of pain.

I agree with the answer the other vet gave you. Without examining him myself it is very difficult for me to say if this is serious or not. You cannot let him go on dragging his legs though. I think you should take him to the neurologist. A work up with an MRI could cost thousands but just the exam should be less than $100. A neurologist would have a better idea of prognosis so I think it is worth the money to have them examine him. Take copies of all your x-rays, blood testing and exam notes from your vet.

Based on what you are describing I would be concerned about a neurologic issue. I would recommend asking your vet for a referral to a veterinary neurologist. They can do some advanced imaging and testing that may help give more answers as to what is going on.
