Can gabapentin safely calm my cat for nail trims or vet visits?

Is 150mg of gabapentin presented in cat food appropriate for a 15 lb cat that is 3 years old prior to nail cutting?

Unfortunately it is illegal for us to give dose information for prescription drugs without seeing your cat in person first. You need to check with Purrrcy's vet to see if this is an appropriate dose. Gabapentin in cats, however, is typically used for pain not sedation.

    Sorry, I hit submit too soon and didn't finish my answer. That being said, a study has found that gabapentin can help reduce stress in cats during transportation, and examination at the vet. You still need to check with his vet to make sure it's ok to give to him. Best of luck.

Hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. Yes, 100mg is a normal dosage for an average sized adult cat. You can open the capsule and mix the powder with a small amount of canned food. Only use enough canned food to mask the powder. If you mix it with a large amount of canned food and she doesn't eat it all, she won't get the full dose. Be sure to give it at least 2-3 hours prior to the appointment. I often recommend people give a dose at home on a day that you can be with him as a trial run so you can see how the drug affects him. You may find that it seems like it is doing nothing for him or you may see that he is too sedate or maybe it is just right. But you can take note to see how long it takes to affect him after he ingests it - some cats take 2-3 hours to get sedate and others only need 30 minutes to an hour. This way you can get the timing right for dosing him for his appointment. You don't have to do this but it may be a good idea as "test run". Hope this helps. Best wish

Gabapentin for cat with road trip anxiety?
We are using gabapentin now more commonly in pets with anxiety or fear prior to stressful events such as a trip to the vet. This could possibly include a road trip as well. This is, however, a prescription medication so it will require a visit to a veterinarian for an examination of your cat or a call to your vet if they have seen your cat recently to determine if they feel the drug is safe and appropriate for your cat in particular. We cannot prescribe medication via this website since we haven't personally examined your cat. Other options that may help with mild anxiety would include Feliway pheremone spray https://www.feliway.com/us#redirected in the cat carrier, and calming supplements such as Composure for cats https://www.vetriscience.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=9008103030 or Zylkene.

Would gabapentin help with Sammie's eye pain? I've read that it's ok in small doses. Is it?
Gabapentin would help with eye pain. The dose would be so low for a cat that your vet may need to prescribe a compounded liquid version of it as the human capsules would contain way too much. I definitely recommend consulting with your veterinarian about it! Good luck!

They may be compounded tablets. Often if vets cannot get a medication at a lower strength, they will get them compounded to the strength they need. I suggest you contact your vet when you get a chance to confirm what you are giving. In the meantime you can give it as directed. Gabapentin has a pretty wide dosing range. For treatment for seizures in cats, gabapentin is started at 2.5 to 5 mg per pound (5 to 10 mg/kg) every 8 to 12 hours. Doses up to 10 mg per pound every 6 hours has been used in some cats. For pain control in cats, doses range from 1.5 to 5 mg per pound (1.25 to 2.5 mg/kg) every 12 hours. Higher doses (up to 50 mg per cat 1 to 3 times daily) are recommended by some vets. So, even if you are giving 100mg twice a day it should not be harmful. She may just be very sleepy if it is a higher dose than what was intended.

Gabapentin will not have any effect on this type of pain, it's a special medication for very specific types of pains, usually chronic neurological pain, it won't have any pain relief effect in this case.

Unfortunately we cannot, by law, recommend that you give any medication to poor Oliver that was not personally prescribed by your own veterinarian. Even with that said, Gabapentin is rarely used in cats because we don't have enough clinical evidence to support using it safely in them for analgesic (pain management) purposes. It sounds like Oliver may have suffered a concussion or even has a musculoskeletal injury around his neck area. You can apply a cold compress on the neck area for 5-10 minutes to help with any suspected swelling for now, and then I recommend getting him seen in the morning by your local vet. Your regular vet may not be open on the weekend; however, there are usually some clinics open (like VCA or Banfield) that can help Oliver get examined, tested for internal injury, and treated appropriately with safe medication specific to his particular injury.

Hello. I would cut back on the Gabapentin. You need to find the lowest possible dose that will ease his anxiety without affecting his ability to function during the day. I would start with 1/2 capsule twice a day. I would see how he responds, & keep decreasing b 50% until his symptoms are fairly well controlled, but his behavior seems normal. some pets jus do no tolerate his medication at all. Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about your cat. I can't find any interactions between them, but I would give one or the other, not both at the same time. You don't want to over-sedate your cat. I'd use the gabapentin for the road trip. I hope this helps!
