My dog's leg hurts, on pain meds, but still in pain. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 4 months old | 37 lbs

My dog hurt his back right leg earlier today and he will not walk on it. I took him to the vet and they prescribed pain meds but they couldn't get him still enough to take x ray. I am taking him back on Monday to get sedated for x-rays but he is acting like he is still in a lot of pain. What should I do?

Give the pain meds your veterinarian prescribed as directed and keep him confined to a crate or small room, going outside only on a leash just long enough to relieve himself, then back in the crate. DO NOT give him any human medications as these can be toxic to dogs, especially ibuprofen and Tylenol.
