What to do for my cat's cracked paw callus to avoid infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old

I have a cat who is born with a bad paw. Normally it doesn't bother her and over time a callus has developed. it would appear right now that there is a crack in the callus. We would like to know what to do to make sure it doesn't become infected or something like that.

If she will tolerate a light wrap you could loosely apply Vetwrap to take the friction of use instead of her foot. You can also keep the skin there clean and dry and apply a little vaseline to the affected area to help keep it fleible and less likely to crack. Make sure to apply a small amount and rub it in well so she doesn't groom it all off. It won't hurt her to ingest it, it's the main ingrdient in hairball medications, but too much could cause diarrhea.
