My dogs ate a full bottle of melatonin gummies. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 3 years old | 42 lbs

We have two dogs not sure if it was both but at least one got into a bottle of melatonin. They are both around 40 lbs. The gummies were 5mg each not sure how many they ate it was almost a full bottle of 90 and there are about 25 left. I did not see xylitol on the ingredients.

Generally melatonin is very safe in dogs, with the main symptoms of overdose including lethargy and stomach upset. Given that they are bigger dogs and the melatonin did not have xylitol (good on you for checking and letting me know!!), they should likely be ok. I'd just keep an eye on them for now. Melatonin is, in general, not a toxic drug. however, little is known about toxicity in dogs/cats. Adverse effects reported in humans include altered sleep patterns, hypothermia, sedation, tachycardia, confusion, headache, and pruritus. the main concern would be the sedation, if it becomes too noticeable then it might be a good idea to take him to your vet in order to get him checked. if he ingested the pills less than 2 hours ago i would also recommend taking him to your vet to get an injection to induce vomiting.

My 15lb dog ate 45mg of melatonin, will he be ok?
He has had 4.5 mg/kg which is an overdose compared to routine dosages used. I could not find any data regarding dogs overdosing which were not sky high. My opinion is that he is likely to have a long sleep and a bit of nausea if anything. However if you want to be in the safer side , you can contact the local veterinary poison unit, or contact a local vet to have sickness induced if concerned .

Fortunately even in very large dosage Melatonin is not considered to be life threatening in dogs, you may expect significant sedation with Django but he isn't in any serious danger, the effect should wear off within 12-24 hours.

My dog ate a container of relax treats . It contained 66 as he had four about 2pm. The relax treats have melatonin in them he is 80lbs
Monitor your dog for oversedation, Since he is a larger dog, I'm inclined to believe that he shouldn't have much trouble with these. If he becomes lethargic or unresponsive o seems to have trouble breathing, get him seen by a vet immediately and take the packaging with you.

Dog ate a melatonin pill that I dropped. The pill contains xylitol. Is melatonin safe for him? Will he be okay since xylitol is dangerous for dogs?
Hi, It is hard to say without more specific information about the dose , concentration of the ingested xylitol. In general a dose of 50 milligrams (mg) of xylitol per pound of body weight (which is 100mg/kg) considered toxic. Xylitol will cause rapid release of insulin which causes a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can be life-threatening. Signs of hypoglycemia may include: vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination, difficulty walking or standing, lethargy, tremors, seizures and coma. If your dog ate toxic amount take him to the vet ASAP, if not yet showing signs induction of vomiting may be done and if there are signs he will need immediate treatment. My dog ingested 5mg melatonin pills. Not sure how many but pretty sure it was not more then 5. I made him throw up 3 times and did see about 3 dissolved pills. Should I take him to the vet?
Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Biggie's troubles! Although there is limited information on the overdosage and toxicity of melatonin in dogs, it is assumed that it is unlikely to cause severe issues with one accidental overdose. Melatonin can actually be prescribed for various medical conditions. In Biggie's case, 10-25mg is a little much, but again, it shouldn't really cause a problem if it just happened this one time. I would keep an eye on Biggie for a few days. Make sure he is acting like his normal self, isn't lethargic or depressed. Make sure he is eating and drinking normally and having normal stools. If he appears sick at any time, you should of course have him evaluated by his veterinarian. Another option you do have, is to call poison control. They may have some more specific information on the potential toxic effects of melatonin. My dog is 15 pounds and ate 5 mg melatonin
That is quite a large dose for a dog that small. While it may just make Max very drowsy, it is best to seek out care ASAP in the event of a large dose or if Max is acting ill. Signs to watch out for include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy/confusion.

My dog had 1 1mg melatonin that contained xylitol shes been acting fine... And like her normal self. This was over an hour ago she even bad some honey and a treat. Will she be ok?? i cant afford to take her to emergency but i can call my vet tomorrow
Typically you see signs of xylitol toxicity 15-30 minutes after ingestion. If it's been an hour, she may be ok but monitor Middy tonight closely. Any concerning signs, get her into an ER vet right away. Otherwise, have her seen by her vet tomorrow.

If it is a ''gummy'' tablet it may cause gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting or diarrhea. The toxicity from the single components (Vitamins, mineral etc etc) depends on their concentration. Generally speaking it should be a major concern as the concentration is quite low. If there is xylitol inside the tablet that may be dangerous, and in case of ingestion, your dog needs to be seen by a veterinarian. The ingestion of xylitol or xylitol-containing products causes a rapid release of the hormone insulin, causing a sudden decrease in the dog's blood glucose. Signs to look for are: lethargy, vomiting, loss of coordination, collapse, and eventually seizures.

Hello My dad ingested 2 gummy vitamin ds and the serving size is 2 gummies at 2000IU and I was wondering if I should be worried about her eating the vitamins that she ate and she is about 70lbs
The amount of Vitamin D ingested will likely not put a dog of her weight at risk of serious toxicity. Make sure the gummies do not contain xylitol. That would be more dangerous than the Vitamin D. If they contain xylitol,seek veterinary attention immediately. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. It may cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. If the gummies do not have xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset.
