My dog's arm growth is scratched and painful with pus. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) | Female | 8 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

Hi our dog Poppy may have scratched this growth that she has had on her arm. Its been there since we found her. Now its starting to bother her due to maybe a scrap outside or playing with our dog. She is licking it, if I put pressure near it, some pain, u can see there is small pustules im assuming from her opening it. Not much blood but a little pus is starting. We covered it lightly with coban last night. Im not sure if its cancer or a tumor of some sort. What should I do? I do have Entederm

That should be seen by your vet for exam and identification. As small as it is, it may be relatively simple to remove by your vet. Until you can get her seen, keep it lightly covered to keep it clean. Your vet will do a physical eam on her, possibly some labwork, like an impression smear, where they press a clean slide against the growth to be eamined under the microscope. Based on these results, your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.
