Can I give my dog more Trazodone/Gabapentin before dental cleaning?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old | 5 lbs

Hi there. My dog has a dental cleaning at 7 am. I miscalculated and gave him his trazodone 25mg and Gabapentin 0.6mL too early at 2 am. Can I give him a second dose in preparation for the appointment around 5:30? He is a pomeranian around 5 lbs.

Unfortunately no you cannot. Trazodone can only be given once every 24 hours and gabapentin every 8 hours. Giving Yogi these pills three and a half hours after the first time you gave them is too close.

Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Duke. I'm sorry that he's been struggling lately, how hard for him and you. You can use the gabapentin and trazadone together. Yes, they can cause increased sedation together, but that may be a good thing if he's sundowning. It will help him sleep and keep him on a regular schedule. I hope this helps!

Yes you can give it with the other medications. Personally I’d not give Nico the gabapentin when giving the trazodone just to be extra cautious since you’ll only be giving it one night for the fireworks. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you get answers to your veterinary questions.

I am a veterinarian, and yes it is safe to combine gabapentin and trazadone. Without seeing your puppy in person, I cannot say specifically it is safe for your dog, but it is a combination that can be used. I hope this helps!

I have rx for both carprofen and gabapentin for my dog. 1st isn't working can I give other 4 hours later. Should I wait till morning?
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sometimes it can take a bit longer for these medications to kick in. It is generally not recommended to use these medications more frequently than how they are recommended as that can result in undesirable side effects such as gastrointestinal side effects with carprofen and significant sedation with gabapentin. For that reason, it would best to wait till the morning if that is what was recommended by the prescribing veterinarian. If you are asking if these two medications can be given together 4 hours apart then the answer would be yes. Good luck!

I cannot find any interaction reports for Trazodone with carprofen (Rimadyl), however there are reports that Trazodone has interactions with Ibuprofen, a similar class of NSAID. This reports that either increases toxicity of the other by added drug effects. Check with your veterinarian on whether he recommends giving the two together. There maybe less toxic effect by giving the Rimadyl in the morning and the Trazodone in the evening. However this is for your vet to decide. If you cannot reach your veterinarian I suggest not to give the Trazodone tonight and keep the dog in a room where she is not likely to be bothered much by trick or treaters.

Generally, we don't expect that these four-a-day medications are given exactly at six hours and it's understandable/okay to have a longer (two extra hours or so) period between pills overnight. This would mean the day ones are given closer together, which is fine for this medication. I hope that helps and Jasmine gets better soon.

Trazadone can be given once or twice daily to dogs. Side effects include increase/decrease in appetite, GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea), sedation, agitation, ataxia (wobbly gait). His past history of pancreatitis is likely not an issue with this medication. If he takes any other medications, consult first with your vet before giving them.

There are no adverse concerns of taking trazodone, apoquel, and rimadyl together. However, the dose of Rimadyl you have listed as 75 mg. That is a pretty high dose for a 41 pound dog. I would typically give 1/2 of a 75 mg tablet twice a day. You can also give 1 full tablet but just once every 24 hours. I think the twice daily dosing is more effective. I'm taking my dog to the vet tomorrow and they recommend giving him 5 100mg tablets of trazadone?!? That seems like alot....he is a boxer mix and weighs 62 lbs.
HI, I think there may have been some mistake in the dosage they told you to give. Trazadone is usually dosed in 100mg pills and large dogs are given up to 200mg about 2 hours before the vet visit to calm him down. I would hesitate to give him more than that. I would start with 200mg and speak to your vet again to make sure the dosage they want to give him is actually 5 tablets and what their reasoning would be. It is important to give the drug enough time to work which usually peaks in about 2 hours so if you do that, 200mg should work fine. Good luck I hope this helps!
