Why is my dog biting his butt, growling, and smelling fishy?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | neutered | 7 years and 8 months old | 57 lbs

Hi there. Our dog “Buddy” is 7 years old, and a 57 lb Goldendoodle. Yesterday he started biting at his Butt/upper left leg. I have tried to look but see nothing. Both last night and tonight when I try to put his leash on to take him out before bed, he started growling at me. He Layed down behind couch (rare), and when I looked over back of it, he growled. He is the sweetest most loving dog, so unusual behavior. There is also a “fishy” odor when close up. Please help. Thank you.

If you are smelling a fishy odor, I suspect that Buddy's having an issue with his anal sacs. A problem with them can be painful if they are impacted or infected, and it would cause him to bite at his butt. Plus not feeling well would make him grumpy. I would take him into a vet first thing in the morning to get this diagnosed and treated. I hope this helps.

Usually a "fishy" smell is associated with full anal glands, and may also cause a dog to lick or scoot their bottom if their glands are full. Cats can also get full anal glands and if constipated or having too loose of stool may not be able to fully empty them. If the problem persists and they don't improve, the smell worsens, or there is visible discharge or discomfort, bring them into your vet to have the area checked for any other possible issues, and to have any full anal glands expressed. Your vet can also show you how to do this in case you need to do it again at home in the future.

His anal glands may be full, impacted or he could be developing an anal gland abscess. You will need to have him physically examined by your veterinarian for a definitive diagnosis and treatment. If the glands are full, expressing them may resolve Theo's symptoms. If an abscess is forming or has formed, it will need to be lanced, drained and flushed. Theo will likely go home with antibiotics and pain medication.

Hi, my dog seems to have a fishy smell coming from his rectum. When I let him out today, it seemed to look a little irritated. Is there a topical cream I can use for him or do i need to call the vet. I havent noticed him licking at all.
You are probably smelling his anal sacs. They are like scent glands in a skunk. They are on eithe side of the anus and the fluid smells awful, like rotten fish. If you’re smelling this then you should bring him in to have the fluid expressed. Sometime dogs get infection in the anal sacs which can be very painful and hard to heal. Most dogs empty the fluid when they defecate or express it when scared, again like a skunk. If the opening gets clogged the fluid can build up causing itching and sometimes infection. They will do a rectal palpation to empty the fluid and that will show whether there is infection present. Thanks for using Boop by Petco to help you care for Rocky.

Last night Bella had a bit of a fishy smell from her behind which I know to be caused by anal gland fluid. She wasn't acting terribly weird, but I could tell she may have had to go to the bathroom. After taking her out a third time, she finally went.
Anal glands are normally expressed during the act of defecation. If you continue to smell the odor, see her licking her hind end or dragging her hind end along the floor, then she should be examined by your veterinarian for possible impacted anal glands.

My dog keeps sitting down real fast and curling to one side. He moans and groans when he gets up and moves. Eating fine, normal potty. And he licks all the dog hair in house floor, bed, everywhere he licks
Poor Buddy! This is a common behavior when they have full anal glands. Anal glands are 2 glands, one on each side of the anus, that holds a foul smelling material. They are there to help naturally lubricate a dog's bowel movements, but not all dogs properly express them. I would take him to your vet clinic and see if they can express his anal glands. Also, he could also act this way and lick everything if he is really itchy, anxious or just uncomfortable. If he doesn't improve after his anal glands are expressed, then I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he doesn't have an infection or something else going on causing these behaviors. My puppy’s butthole is very smelly and I can smell it from a distance. It also seems to have a fluid coming out. Its clear, but also a mucus color like whiteish. Should I be concerned?
What you are smelling may be anal gland secretions. If one or both of the anal glands are very full they will sometimes "overflow" and then you have them exit the anus. This is a very bad sort of fishy smell. Next time you visit your vet for his vaccinations, you should have the vet examine them and empty them if necessary. If you think he has problems pooping or if he cries when pooping or if he scoots his behind on the floor, then they may be infected or impacted and need to be checked by your veterinarian.

My dog has a weird fishy smell coming from him
I’m wondering if Bruno may have expressed his anal glands - the fluid typically has a foul, fishy odor. Urine might also smell fishy if there is infection. If the smell continues you may want to have Bruno examined by your vet.

My dogs tummy feels a little warm and her vagina area in letting off a tuna smell why is that? I just gave her a bath less than a week ago.
The fishy odor is probably coming from her anal sacs. They are fluid filled sacs on either side of her anal opening. They are like scent glands in a skunk. The fluid smells awful. Dogs can get infections in the anal sacs and they can express the smelly fluid when they are scared. I recommend having them emptied by your veterinarian to check for infection and prevent the buildup of fluid. This is most common in smaller breeds of dogs. Lately Zeus has been biting at his butt but no rubbing on the carpet. I took him for a walk today and noticed his anal area was wet looking but he hadn't pooped yet. Any help would be appreciated
I would try feeding him some canned pumpkin with his next meal. This will sometimes help dogs naturally express their anal glands. By tomorrow, if his condition is not improved I would have a veterinarian clean them out. They can become impacted and infected.

Ozzy's bum smells bad. My other male dog is continually licking Ozzy's bum. He is pooping fine and rating and drinking. I don't see any lumps or anything odd. What can this possibly be?
One possibility would be that Ozzy is expressing fluid from his anal glands. Anal gland fluid often has a fishy smell to it that attracts other dogs.
