My Great Dane licked garlic. Is it dangerous for a large dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Male | unneutered | 140 lbs

I have a Great Dane who is 140lbs. When I turned around from cooking he licked a pan with garlic. I don’t know how much he got but he probably got a few licks. Should I be concerned? He’s running around like normal and has an appetite and thirst.

While garlic is toxic to dogs, Oliver would have needed to eat at least an entire head of garlic in order to experience any serious toxic effects since he's such a big dog. There's still a slight chance that he might develop a mild stomach upset with vomiting or diarrhea, but even that's pretty unlikely. Just keep an eye on him, but you don't need to worry!
