Is it normal for my dog's tail to stiffen when I scratch his back?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 70 lbs

My dog is a rescue mastiff cross. Whwen he walks he has characteristic "Queen Anne" rear legs. When he comes to greet me in the morning he offers me his rear end and I heavily massage his back in front of his tail. He seems to benefit from this. His tail becomes rigid and I thought at first that it was some sort of sexual behaviour. I have not seen this mentioned as normal behaviour.

This is normal. Sometimes it's hard for dogs to reach that back area, so when it's scratched, they get a lot of pleasure from it. Cats can behave the same way when you scratch that area as well. It's not sexual. I hope this helps!

No he is likely just itchy in that spot. This is no an uncommon response in dogs to being scratched in an itchy place. Especially if he is normal at all other times. I hope this helps and thank you for using Boop by Petco!

when i pet my dogs lower back it sometimes twitches and he’ll start scratching just under his ribs with his back paw (kind of like he’s ticklish). i’ve noticed it’s also more prominent on the right side.
The two most common reasons for this type of behavior would be that Charlie does have a naturally more sensitive area or a ‘sweet spot’. This is not pathologic. Another cause is a skin infection or fleas so check his skin very thoroughly for any abnormalities and have him examined by the veterinarian if needed. Best of luck.

It could be that she is itchy. If she is not spayed and is in heat/nearing heat, this can also be a behavior that happens in response. Some dogs may also instinctively scratch or wiggle their tali to the side when petted on the hips or base of the tail. Checking for any parasites such as fleas or ticks on the base of the tail can help alert you to parasites, and if you suspect worms, having a fecal exam done with your local vet can help rule these out.

This behavior could mean Sake is itching back there (it's hard for them to reach that area) and you scratching it resolves the itch, or he could simply like being scratched there. It may feel good to him. Cats can be sensitive to being scratched in that area. I hope this helps!

Why does my dogs tail look like this? I gave him a bath last Sunday and since Monday this is how it’s look. He has no problems laying down, sitting, pooping, peeing, eating or playing.
It's possible he has some sensitivity or discomfort. It could be associated with the bath or completely unrelated. Monitor him for lethargy, restless or sensitivity around his back end. Look him over for obvious signs or injury such as bruising or swelling. If you notice anything or if he develops any of these symptoms, have him examined by your veterinarian.

My pomerian seems to bristle when I stroke his back is this nerve damage?
Hi and thanks for using Boop by Petco! Sounds like this is just a skin sensation and nerve reaction from the petting. Dogs skin is very sensitive and will react like this when stroked or petted. I think this is completely normal. Good luck with Blanco. If you notice anything abnormal associated with the petting (pain, discomfort, etc) then I would advise having your vet check him out.

Why is my puppy often biting its own tail.
At that age, he's exploring and figuring things out and just having fun! With an older dog, I'd be worried about it being more of an obsessive compulsive disorder if it was very frequent or hard to distract him from, but it's normal behavior for a baby.

Hello, sorry to hear about Jaxx. This can be associated with abnormal sensation at his tail either due to an old injury or something such as flea bites. This may also be associated with abnormalities of her anus, such as impacted anal glands or an anal gland abscess. More rarely, this may be associated with a main neurologic disease such as a seizure. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly due to allergies. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for envir
