My puppy has diarrhea. We noticed tiny pieces of mulch in his stool this morning. He just joined the family on Thursday. On the bright side he is playful, is drinking water, eating, and we noticed his stomach inflammation has decreased since Thursday.

As long as Barney is eating and drinking normally, I wouldn't be too concerned about the mulch. You do need to watch him closely when he is outside to prevent eating any more mulch (or other things that puppies think might be a good idea to eat!). If he is less inclined to eat like normal, start vomiting, having diarrhea, or is straining to defecate, he needs to get checked out by a vet.
