Kitten shedding tapeworms after Strongid treatment, is this normal?

Hi! My kitten unfortunately has tapeworms and I went to the vet a little over a week ago and he prescribed him 2 doses of Strongid. The first one was given the day he went to the vet, and the 2nd does is to be given this upcoming saturday. BUT he still is leaving dead worms (sesame seed like) after he sleeps for a long period of time (when he’s extremely relaxed) and he just pooped and so i checked it and there was still worms in his stool and there were quite a few in there. Is this normal?

Yes, this is normal. The medication is working and due to the lifecycle of the worms, that other dose is need to kill all of them. This second dose should help kill them all and he should stop shedding the worms with a week after the last dose. I hope this helps!

That means the medication is working, as you can frequently see dead worms after a treatment. Godive will need another deworming treatment in two weeks to kill all the worms, and I would give her another dose then.

This is not uncommon to see. The dewormer works by paralyzing the worms and they are sometimes only partially affected by the drug. The fact that they are coming out shows that it's working to a certain degree; and the worms will likely die soon. No need to worry. Keep up with the deworming schedule as prescribed by your vet and she should be rid of them soon.

They may or may not be related to the deworming today, but either way they definitely roundworms! Call your vet to let them know what you saw. Chances are that the dewormer they used today will be enough to treat them. Make sure to repeat the deworming in 3-4 weeks to make sure the infection is completely taken care of!

If she is pooping out worms, that means that the dewormer is working. She may need to be dewormed several times due to the life cycle of the worms. I would also recommend having a fecal exam done at a veterinary clinic since not all dewormers kill all types of worms and parasites. Many pets can be infected with multiple types of worms at the same time.

Hello. Once the tapeworm has been killed by the wormer, the parasite is often digested ( it exerts a protective coating while alive ), & we usually do not see tapeworms passed in the stool. If it was a particularly heavy infestation, you may see some pass out, but this is not the norm. Any signs of tape segments should also disappear shortly. I like Profender, it is a good product, but I would follow label directions & reapply when recommended. Otherwise, once it wears off, your cat can pick up more tapeworms from hunting & from fleas ( make sure you are using a good flea preventative, too ). Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Great question! When kittens have worms, it typically takes two deworming treatments given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. The first kills the adults already present, which the second kills the adults who had not yet hatched from the eggs at the time of the first deworming treatment. I would give you kittens another deworming treatment now, a second two weeks after the first, and then they should be dewormed every three months regularly. If deworming them again doesn't help with the scooting behavior, then I would take them back into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps :-)

Yes, Casper could have worms and it could be tapeworms which are not treated by panacur. Tapeworms require praziquantel to kill, which is available by prescription only from the vet. Kittens need to be dewormed every month until they are six months of age, and it could be that Casper has a heavy burden of worms and needs another deworming treatment now. Once he reaches six months of age, he should be dewormed every three months. I would take him and a sample of his feces into the vet so the vet can treat him.

Yes, this does happen after a deworming treatment. It sounds like Tex had roundworms, and you are seeing the dead ones coming out. It means the deworming treatment is working. He will need another treatment in two weeks after the first. He should then be dewormed every two weeks until he is three months only, then every month until he is six months old. Then he should be dewormed regularly, every three months.
