Dog limping after playing outside, then walking normally. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 4 years and 2 months old | 19 lbs

Maddie was just playing outside and is lifting her right side leg off the ground and was rolling over and not really wanting to put weight on it. She’s slowing putting weight on it and walking and running normally and occasionally lifting it off the ground. Is this normal and what should I do?

Hello. If Maddie is beginning to put weight on the leg, then she may have just twisted or strained the leg. I would recommend giving her a bit of a rest for the rest of the day. No more running, jumping or playing to see if this just corrects on its own. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Hi ! If she is limping when using the leg, something is hurting. No, it is not normal for any dogs or Dachshund puppies to be limping and stumbling. I would keep her rested for a couple of days, avoiding playing and see if it eases off or not. If it doesn’t, or if it seems to get worse over the next couple of days, definitely have her checked over. Hope Madeline is better soon, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach !
