My dog licked another dog's eye pus. Should I worry about infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I am dog sitting a senior 12 year old dog that is blind. The eyes of the blind dog has greenish pus on them and was concerned when my dog started licking him there a bit. Should I be worried if my dog comes down with something because of that? Perhaps a bacterial infection?

Hello. While it is very unlikely that your dog will contract any infectious disease by licking the eyes of the blind dog, I would try & discourage this. It might be best to keep the old dog's eyes wiped down with a little warm water, just to be safe. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
