My cat's nose scratch won't heal, now bald. Is it ringworm or trauma?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Bombay | Male | neutered | 9 years and 10 months old | 15 lbs

Hello, Around 3 weeks ago my cat had what looked like a scratch on his nose with slight dried blood. Now, the area has lost hair and looks like a bald patch. It does not look infected but after 3 weeks we would expect for it to clear up so unsure what to do from here? Does this look like some sort of trauma to his nose? Maybe he is continuing to bump it which is why it’s not improving. Could it be ring worm?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It could be ringworm. It does not look like self-inflicted trauma unless you witness Pepsi scratching the face excessively or rubbing against walls / carpets. Please, take Pepsi to your local vets for an appointment. He will be either prescribed cream / ointment that covers both bacterial infection and ringworm infection or your vet will recommend examining skin scrapes under the microscope to make the definite diagnosis before starting treatment.
