Puppy neuter: thread from scar after glue. Are they internal stitches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 24 days old | 10 lbs

My puppy was neutered a month ago, the wound is closed everything was completely fine, but yesterday I found a reddish pimple on the scar with the tiny piece of thread sticking out, I just received an answer from Petco Pet Education Center vet that it might be stitches, however I want to know when closing a wound with surgical glue do the vet still use stitches? My puppy's wound was closed with surgical glue, do the vet still put inside stitches that might stick out?

Hi there. Yes, there is generally a layer of stitches in the subcutaneous tissue under the skin, even if the skin incision itself is closed with glue. So it's very possible that the small bump you are seeing could be related to the end of a suture poking out from this layer underneath. If you're concerned, you could definitely have your veterinarian take a quick look at it and see. If this is the case, usually no treatment is needed - the sutures will dissolve and be absorbed by the body after a few weeks or months, depending on the type of suture material that was used.

Hello. Do not be too worried. It is possible that a small piece of suture has worked its way up. This suture is designed to dissolve over time. I would suggest letting your vet take a look at this as he might be able to just remove the small piece of suture. In the meantime, I would continue using a triple antibiotic on the area until your vet can take a look at this. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
