Why is my male dog suddenly yelping in pain near his testicles?

My dog woke up suddenly yelping in pain but there is no apparent reason and he has been fine all day up to now. Both myself and my husband have checked him all over. He still has an appetite so I'm guessing it's not gastrointestinal, but just now I was checking him all over again and I noticed that when I got near his testicles he yelled in quite a bit of pain and seems to be doing so periodically ever since. He has been acting semi-reclusive and cries to himself sporadically. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 3 months old | 25 lbs
