Why does my cat have brown or black crust on his nose? Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 lbs

Hello! So for awhile my cat has had like a brownish/blackish crust in and around his nose that I have been cleaning. Lately it seems like there’s more of it. He hasn’t ever presented any other symptoms that have been worrisome so I never thought much about it but I heard it could mean something bad? Could this be normal or do y’all think I should take him in for this? Thanks! ❤️ (some pics below of stuff I’ve cleaned off for reference)

The crusts are caused by the nose running just a little, then it mixes with skin cells and bacteria or yeast to turn brown. Some cats can have a low-grade chronic upper respiratory infection to cause it. In some of these cats, a supplement called lysine can help (see link below). If the skin under the crusts appears normal, then I would just continue to clean gently with a warm wet washcloth daily. https://www.amazon.com/VetriScience-Laboratories-Vetri-Lysine-Bite-Sized/dp/B002ALE9RM/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=lysine+treats&qid=1602343461&sr=8-1

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be nasal secretions from something like an upper respiratory infection. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibility and treat accordingly. Good luck and have a good night!
