Is my dog's 300mg doxycycline dosage for Lyme disease too high?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 13 years and 2 months old | 40 lbs

My dog just got Lyme.  My vet prescribed 300 mg of doxycycline hyclate / day.  My dog weighs 40 lbs, is a beagle mix, and 13 years old. He also takes "apoquel" (8 mg/day) for an overactive immune system and allergy problem. Most sites say that for a 40 pound dog the max doxycycline dosage is 200 mg/ day.  Is the doxycyline dosage too high? What do you think?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The recommended dose of doxycycline for Lyme disease is 20mg/lb once daily, so Joey should be taking around 200mg a day. Rarely doxycycline is used at higher doses or more frequently than once every 24hrs. Please, get in touch with your local vet to discuss the treatment as it sounds that the dose should be slightly adjusted.
