Puppy diarrhea after grooming: When to see vet or try home remedies?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 21 days old | 30 lbs

My 5 month old German Shepherd puppy has had diarrhea since her grooming appointment yesterday. Her poop was much more solid today, but still a little soft. She has been acting completely normal and eating and drinking normally as well. Should I get my puppy looked at by a vet? Or is there something I can do at home to help her?

It may be stress from the groomer that is causing Thalia's diarrhea. It could also be that the groomer gave her a treat she has never had before causing it. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she refuses to eat the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. If she gets stressed out about being groomed it could be just a stress colitis. If she seems fine otherwise, withhold food for 12-24 hours, but let her have water. At the end of 12-24 hours, give her a very small amount of her regular food. If all goes well, give her a little more 30-45 minutes later, continue this way until she has had her normal meal amount. If the diarrhea continues, or if she starts vomiting, becomes lethargic, refuses food or shows any other adverse symptoms, get her in to see your vet as soon as possible.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Delta. I would recommend talking with her veterinarian today if they are open. They may need to see her, but other times you can just drop off a fecal sample. Stress can cause a bacterial imbalance in the gut. This can perpetuate the diarrhea. Parasites are also unfortunately common in pups. You do not want to miss something that may have been coincidental with the grooming. I would recommend feeding her smaller more frequent meals in the meantime as this. will be easier on her gut. You can also add a reputable probiotic such as Fortiflora or Proviable. This will repopulate her gut with good bacteria. I hope this information helps!

It sounds like Hershey is suffering from diarrhea, and in young puppies, that can commonly be caused by intestinal worms. Make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments, giving her one if she is not. She should be dewormed again in two weeks to kill all the worms in her intestines, then monthly until she is six months of age. After that, she should be dewormed every three months. I can also give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps her. Withhold food for 8 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. My dog ate a bag of treats last night. And she woke me up at 1 to go poop. And then when she was in her cage while I was at work she pooped in her cage (soft). And now I took her on a walk and she pooped again. And it looked bad.
