Why does my dog cough and gag all night but seem fine during the day?

Poor Popeye. This can be a sign of a respiratory infection or something more serious such as a collapsing trachea or heart disease. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain what is going on. I recommend getting him checked out by a vet. The vet can do a physical exam, blood work, a urinalysis, and possibly chest x-rays to see what is causing his cough. Once a diagnosis is made, the vet can discuss treatment options with you. Please call his vet now to make him an appointment. Best of luck.

This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure). Your vet;s exam will also detect any problems with the heart, that may be causing the cough. Please cschedule an appointment with your vet soon.

For the last couple of days, my dog has been experiencing this kind of dry cough, like she's about to throw up, but she doesn't, and I'm starting to get worried because it's something that happens everyday and I feel like it's getting worse
It could be caused by an infection, heart disease, collapsing trachea, asthma, allergies, etc. The only was to know the cause is to have a vet do an examination. Your vet may also need to take a chest x-ray and run some bloodwork to help diagnose. Since it seems to be getting worse, please call your vet and schedule an appointment. Hope she feels better soon!

I hate to hear your pet is coughing so much. Unfortunately, it's impossible to know the underlying cause of the coughing without a physical exam and possible radiographs. Pets can cough due to allergies, parasites, collapsing trachea, heart disease, lung disease, cancer, infections or something stuck in the throat. Treatment is different for each of these conditions. I recommend to have your pet examined by again the veterinarian. if a treatment doesn't work, it usually means the true cause of the coughing has not been discovered. This cannot be treated at home without knowing what is going on. I recommend that you have Milo evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. A honking sounding cough with some gagging is a very typical sign of a condition called collapsing trachea. This is condition of the airway where it collapses down when they try to breath. This would be unrelated to the rake incident, but the rake incident might have stressed Gizmo to the point of an attack or episode where this collapsing trachea has become evident. It usually only flares up when they are stressed or breathing heavy. Another possible cause is kennel cough, once again unrelated to the rake incident but the stress could have caused a flare-up. This causes a hacking cough that is persistent. The other option is that the CPR episode caused trauma or inflammation to the airway or neck. Either way, the best thing to do would be to have a check up with a vet to see if some of these other underlying diseases are present, so you can treat (in terms of kennel cough or irritation of the trachea), or prevent future episodes (in terms o

If Panda had something stuck in his throat, he wouldn't be eating because any object there would prevent him from swallowing. It could be that his allergies are causing him to cough, or he could be getting a respiratory infection. Keep an eye on him for the next couple of days, and if the cough continues, take him into the vet. Rest him to see if that helps with it. If he develops other symptoms such as anorexia, sneezing, nasal discharge, and/or lethargy, then I would take him into the vet sooner. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. He may have an upper respiratory tract infection. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink as normal. Keep him home to allow his body to rest and away from other dogs as he may be contagious (no walks, dog parks, etc). Hello! It sounds like Buddy could either have kennel cough, nasal mites or possibly a collapsing trachea. I'm not sure what breed your dog is but collapsing trachea is common in small breed dogs. Kennel cough and nasal mites cause what sounds like a cough. I would google videos of each to see if your pet is showing a cough or reverse sneeze which occurs with those infections and then go back to your get for treatment.

My Rolley he is Maltese and has a raspy cough like something is in his throat and is licking his lips a lot. He seems more affected after barking or running and sometimes wakes up during the night rasping.What could be causing this problem.
Rolley's cough could be due to heart disease, infectious diseases (heartworm disease, pneumonia, etc.), chronic bronchitis, collapsing trachea, among other conditions. A cough that is significant enough to wake him up and affect his quality of life must be assessed by a vet. Rolley should have a physical exam, chest x-rays, and heartworm test as a starting point to determine the cause of his cough so that it can be treated appropriately.
