Can my gecko give salmonella to my birds? How to keep them safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male | unneutered

Hello, I am a bird owner to a conure and cockatiel. One of my classmates is looking to rehome their gecko and as I'm a fan of exotic pets I'm looking into what sort of care and such they would need. One thing I found is that many reptiles carry salmonella and that it is theoretically possible for this to be transmitted to my birds. My question is whether there is a significant risk to my birds if I adopt the gecko or if this risk can be avoided by handwashing and such. Thanks in advance!

Hello. It is very important that you always wash your hands after handling any reptile & before handling your birds or any materials belonging to the birds. I do not think you need to keep the gecko in a separate room, just use common sense care & everyone will stay safe & healthy. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
