My cat is choking on food. What can I do to help him before the vet?

My cat has swallowed food before and got it stuck in throat but it has went away. Tonight, he again has something stuck and he stretches his neck trying to swallow. His meow is garbled. He tries to cough but cant. I used a syringe an put some warm water in his mouth twice. I cant hold him to see if there is something there. Can't see a vet till morning, in case. He breaths ok. Will he be OK till morning if it lasts that long? Something else I can try? Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs
