My cat is choking on food. What can I do to help him before the vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 9 lbs

My cat has swallowed food before and got it stuck in throat but it has went away. Tonight, he again has something stuck and he stretches his neck trying to swallow. His meow is garbled. He tries to cough but cant. I used a syringe an put some warm water in his mouth twice. I cant hold him to see if there is something there. Can't see a vet till morning, in case. He breaths ok. Will he be OK till morning if it lasts that long? Something else I can try?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Poe. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian as soon as possible if his symptoms have persisted. In the meantime, you can try rubbing his throat. This can aid in and encourage swallowing. You can open his mouth and see if you see anything in the back of his throat. Small amounts of water as you are doing can help as well. I hope this information helps!
