My vet gave my dog expired meds. Is this okay? Was I overcharged?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 years and 4 months old | 13 lbs

Mia had surgery in July and was given a fentanyl patch and 3 other meds that were all at least a month out of code. I was charged almost 50.00 for the patch. Is it a common practice to be given older meds by a vet. Should I have been charged so much for them?

No it’s not common practice to prescribe medication past it’s use by date. Each practice charges differently for their medications so I can’t say if you were charged too much for the drugs. I would point out to Mia’s vet that the drugs are expired.

Oh no, that's not good that the medication is expired! Because it's expired, I would not give it to Shiro, as leaving it overnight will be ok. Call your vet in the morning to let them know they accidentally gave you expired medications, and they can get you a fresh one.

Is it OK to give my dog Adequan 1 month after the vial says it has expired?
I would not recommend giving any medication past the expiration date - although it could be fine there is no guarantee regarding it’s efficacy or sterility. It would be best to give medication that is still in date.

Unfortunately, you will have to resolve this with the veterinary clinic. It's possible some of the liquid evaporated. It's possible she was dosed an extra amount by accident. It's also possible the correct amount of liquid was not administered when the medication was reconstituted. It sounds like Hazel did take all the medication however (which is good). I recommend to ask the veterinarian if the extra two days is very important or if a wait and see approach could be ok. You can always start another course of medication if needed. You may also ask about other therapies that could help keep Hazel healthy. We may be able to offer some assistance there is you would like to repost another question. How long after the expiration date is rimadyl good for?
No medication should be given after the expiration date. The expiration dates are determined because medication begins to degrade and become ineffective after the expiration date. Some medications also become unsafe in addition to being ineffective. Do not give Marley expired Rimadyl and contact her vet to have this prescription refilled, if needed. I hope that all goes well!

I believe that the more informed a pet owner is, the better advocate they can be when it comes to determing the best course of treatment for their pet. hello, thank you for using Boop by Petco. If you have Carprieve I would use it even if it is not in-date. If they are outdated they will not likely cause any issues, they just may not work as well as they normally would. According to the photo it looks like they technically expired 11/2019. I would give her 1.5 tablets twice per day. Please still take her to your vet for an exam. In an older dog with known joint issues it is best to do so. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Mia. Gabapentin has a very wide dosing range. The amount given will likely make her sedate, but should not cause her any long lasting harm. Give her next dose back on schedule if she is not too groggy. If so, you can wait an extra hour or two to give it more time to wear off. I hope this information helps!

He should see another vet for this since your vet is out of town, and I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends to afford a vet. I can also give you some resources that may help you afford one. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. Unfortunately a veterinarian cannot legally prescribe you pain medication without examining your dog within the past year, so we cannot prescribe any medication through our online service. They may be expired, but also she is an older dog and she could have a health condition that means taking steroids is not recommended at all. You could accidentally do serious harm. She will need to see a vet to get more pain medications. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online.
