Why does my dog have a red nail with dark discharge that doesn't hurt?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs

My dog has had this red tinge to her nail for over a year. Was told it was oil buildup from a vet, but recently has the darker discharge that is dried by the nailbed. Does not bother her or hurt her at all.

Hello. Posey may be chronically licking at this nail for some reason. Usually, this is an infection with Malessezia paronychia, a yeast like organism. Next time you see your veterinarian, suggest a skin scrape be done at the level of the nail bed to see if she can get more information. If organisms are seen, then treatment with an oral antifungal medication & a medicated shampoo for a month usually clears this infection up. The discolored nail will slowly grow out. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
