Why does my dog have a red nail with dark discharge that doesn't hurt?

My dog has had this red tinge to her nail for over a year. Was told it was oil buildup from a vet, but recently has the darker discharge that is dried by the nailbed. Does not bother her or hurt her at all. Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 25 lbs

Hello. Posey may be chronically licking at this nail for some reason. Usually, this is an infection with Malessezia paronychia, a yeast like organism. Next time you see your veterinarian, suggest a skin scrape be done at the level of the nail bed to see if she can get more information. If organisms are seen, then treatment with an oral antifungal medication & a medicated shampoo for a month usually clears this infection up. The discolored nail will slowly grow out.
