Is puppy swelling & pooping less normal after cryptorchid surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Male | unneutered | 10 months old | 10 lbs

My puppy had crypthoid surgery 5 days ago, today is the sixth day, he a little swelling on his right side where the undescended testicle was taken out from, the dr. saw him two days after the surgery and said was normal and will go down 5 or 6 days after, it is not getting bigger but is not noticeably smaller. Otherwise the puppy is OK, he is lively, he wants to eat the only thing he is pooping only once in 24 hours is this swelling and pooping normal?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Typically, a swelling after castrating cryptorchid puppy is present around the wound for a few days. If the swelling is still significant or if it is bothering Nelson, you should get him checked again by your local vets as he may need a course of anti-inflammatory medications. As long as your puppy is passing normal, solid stools and he does not show any discomfort during defecation, it is most likely normal for him to poop only once a day and there is nothing to worry about.

The redness should go away within in a week. The skin will be irritated from being cut into and it does take some time for that to go down. Same with the swelling. If you are very concerned about the swelling, I'd suggest you give his vet a call to let them know your concerns and they can advise if you should bring him in or not. But I can tell you some swelling is normal. Best of luck.
