Why is my kitten's nose cracked and split? When to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 11 days old

My 28 week old female kitten (Mixed breed) has a cracked and slightly split nose, her philtrum and her right nostril seem to be effected. Indoor cats, air conditioning is on a thermostat at about 24 degrees Celsius. She has a diet of good quality dry food 3 times a day and 1 wet food a day. 2 cats in the house, another female, same litter, together since birth. Ears and feet fine, still teething, gum colour normal. sleeping slightly more, drinking normal. Any ideas? Play fighting? Virus? Thanks

Ouch! It looks like the nose may have gotten a minor wound on it, possibly from rough play. I would keep the nose clean and dry to prevent any infection and keep an eye on it. If the cracking dries out and continues, worsens, signs of infection appear, or it is very bothersome to Gamba, a vet visit is best to rule out more serious issues.
