My dog ate steak with onion salt. Is it toxic? What should I do?

my 44 lb. Brittany just nabbed a 6 oz. sirloin steak, seasoned on top with onion salt. what do I do?

Yum, that sounds pretty good! If there isn't a lot of onion salt on the steak, JJ should be fine. It might cause him some stomach upset, so I'd keep an eye on him for now. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a loss of appetite, then I'd take him into a vet to get checked out. More than likely, he should be ok. I hope this helps!

My big dog jumped onto the table and ate beef and onions. I don't think that she ate that much, but she definitely ate more beef than onion (maybe 1-2 rings of cooked onion). She is acting normal and I made her eat water, what should I do?
If it was just a small amount of beef and just two onions, then there is little need for concern. The only concern with eating the beef would be that it might upset the stomach and in rare cases cause inflammation of the pancreas (this usually happens in cases where they eat a lot). However, the vast majority of dogs will handle it just fine. Onion is known to be toxic (causes damage to red blood cells) to dogs, but she would have to eat much more than two rings for it to be a problem. Overall, I think you have nothing to worry about, but I'll give you just a couple of things to look for as signs there is a problem: 1) Macey is acting more tired than normal. 2) Macey vomits more than three times or is vomiting for more than 24 hours. If you see this or anything else concerning, then it would be worthwhile to take Macey to the vet.

My dog just ate a small side of potato salad, including onions.. he just went to lay down, although it is night time and he usually goes to bed at this time, i'm still worried. What should I do?
Oh no, that's not good that Duncan at onions! Onions are toxic to dogs, but if he only ate a small side, he may not have eaten enough to cause problems. Without seeing him in person, however, I can't say for certain if he ate enough to cause problems or not. Onions cause anemia in dogs, and it can take up to a couple of days for symptoms to appear. If he ate the potato salad less than two hours ago, you can take him into a vet immediately to induce vomiting. Otherwise, monitor him for now. If he starts vomiting, becomes anorexic, the lethargy continues, and/or has diarrhea, then I would have him seen by a vet right away.

Hi so my dog snatched 2 steaks when I turned around and she ate them in a blink of an eye will she be ok
I would keep an eye on Jewl. High amounts of fat can cause issues such as pancreatitis, which is a serious condition, and even in smaller amounts, steak may cause GI upset such as vomiting or diarrhea for a few days. If she does vomit, removing her food for a few hours and then offering a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice can help. If she keeps vomiting, seems painful or in distress, has a tender abdomen, or has blood in her vomit or diarrhea, these can indicate more serious complications which should be seen by a vet ASAP.

My dog ate almost an entire container of French onion dip and I don’t know what to do
Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Jax got into the french onion dip. While onions are toxic to dogs, it requires a large quantity of real onions to cause a problem to dogs. Signs of onion toxicity include lethargy, pale gums or red-brown gums, vomiting, or drooling. If Jax is still acting normally and it has been over 2-3 hours from the time of ingestion, he should be OK. He may have an upset stomach and have some diarrhea for the next couple days, but he shouldn't experience any serious complications. If you are ever concerned, I recommend contacting your nearest veterinarian to see if Jax can be seen. I hope this is helpful!

My 20ish lb dog ate some salt from an open packet on the sidewalk during our walk. Is this cause for concern?
No she/he should be fine if it was just salt. It takes a lot of salt ingestion to cause any immediate concerns in pets (salt intoxication). So if it was only a small amount you don't have anything to worry about. Just make sure to offer her/him some water and access to water at all times, so if she/he needs to they can rebalance their body by diluting out the salt. Also I would refrain from giving him/her any people foods that are high in salt for the next 24 hrs, only regular dog food. If by chance your pet did ingest a large amount of salt then watch out for signs of trouble which include ataxia (drunken walk), panting, mental dullness, and vomiting. If seen then it is best to take him/her to your vet immediately for treatment.

My dog weighs over 100 pounds and he ate a small amount of onions earlier today. He ate his dinner and is drinking water, but I'm still worried. Will he be okay?
Onions contain an ingredient called thiosulphate which is toxic to cats and dogs. The ingestion of onions causes a condition called hemolytic anemia, which is characterized by damage to the red blood cells. Onion toxicity can cause the red blood cells circulating through your pet’s body to burst. Symptoms of this condition include breathlessness, lethargy, diarrhea and vomiting. Your pet also could lose interest in food as a result of this type of poisoning. It may take up to two to four days after your pet eats the onion for symptoms to appear. All onions — whether cooked or raw — are a danger to your pet. It takes a very small amount of onions to poison your cat or dog. Consumption of as little as 15 to 30 g/kg in dogs has resulted in clinically important hematologic changes. Onion toxicosis is consistently noted in animals that ingest more than 0.5% of their body weight in onions at one time. At 110 pounds, Holmes would have needed to ingest 750-1500 grams of onions to show toxi

my dog ate a couple pieces of fried onion petals, she weighs about 100 pounds, will she be okay ??
A few pieces of onion ingested by a dog of Mochi's size will likely cause nothing worse than some minor stomach upset, if anything at all. She would need to eat 2 or 3 med/large onions in order to be at risk of serious toxicity. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea but continues to behave normally, you can fast her for 24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to her regular diet afterwards.

my Jack Russell ate some sliced onions from leftover Chinese from the bins that's over a week old and I'm not sure how much she ate. it's been 12 hours since she ate it and she seems to be okay. however should I go to the vet to check she's ok
Hello and welcome to Boop by Petco. In order to get a toxic amount of onions, a normal sized Jack Russel Terrier would have to have eaten about a whole onion. If it was just a few pieces I wouldn't be too concerned, however if it was a large amount I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test to see if her red cells are affected. Otherwise, I would watch her for vomiting and diarrhea, as mold from old food contains toxins that can cause severe gastritis, as well as tremors and seizures. If you are unsure of how much she had, I would have her seen by a vet for a blood test. If you look at her gums and they look brown instead of pink, or she has any trouble breathing or is weak and lethargic, then this is very very serious and you have to get her to a vet right away. My dog ate 5 or 7 onion rings what do i do
Onions can be toxic to dogs, for such a big dog this amount is not likely to be toxic but this cannot be ruled out completely. symptoms you need to be looking for: Lethargy. Weakness. Ataxia (lack of muscle coordination) Pale gums. Red or brown discolored urine. Hyper-salivation. Occasional vomiting and/or diarrhea.

My dog ate the tiniest piece of minced onion, will he be okay? Size of piece shown in photo.
The dose of onion in dogs that is toxic is about 0.5 grams per kilogram of body weight. For a 10 pound dog, that would be about 20 grams of onion. There are about 5 grams in each teaspoon, so Marlin would have to eat over 4 tsp of onions in order to be concerned about toxicity. The biggest concern comes with dehydrated onions which are much more concentrated than fresh onions. It sounds like Marlin will be fine, but please contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
