What long-lasting chews are safe for my dog with food allergies?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 25 lbs

My dog has pretty bad food allergies. She’s been on Royal Canin rabbit and potato and their hydrolyzed treats for a while now and it has stopped her from scratching her ears open. I’m just wondering if there is some sort of dog bone or raw hide I might be able to give her. She really likes treats that she can chew on for a long time.

I would avoid it. When dogs have bad food allergies, it's best to only stick with the food that prevents them from having symptoms. Adding in another treat could cause Charli's allergies to flare up and have symptoms again. It's best to keep giving her the hydrolyzed treats. I hope this helps!

The key to doing treats while a dog is on an elimination diet is to use treats that have the same ingredients as the food you are trying. Sometimes the easiest way to do this is to use canned food of the variety and flavor that you are using to put in a Kong or bake into treats. Other options would be to use sweet potato chews if the food you are feeding has sweet potatoes in it (which Zignature kangaroo does not) or giving dehydrated chews that are the same meat source that you are feeding (which will be a challenge for a kangaroo food). So, for the food you are feeding right now, the best option may be to use canned Zignature kangaroo to create treats for Lucy. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Boop by Petco.

Hello. If Pluto is doing well on a lamb based diet, then the lamb treats should be perfect for him. They do make hypoallergenic dog treats, but you may need to get them from your veterinarian. If Pluto has a relapse or breakthrough skin rash, immediately stop the lamb treats & you will most likely just need to stick with his kibble. Thanks for contacting Boop by Petco.

Food allergies are due to certain proteins and they are usually animal proteins (beef, pork, dairy, etc.). Allergies or adversities to wheat/corn/soy are very rare and not worth eliminating unless you know for sure that he is allergic to them. To find the actual protein Jake is allergic to, you have to do an elimination trial. If there was not an elimination trial done, then you would be only guessing at the source of the allergies. One way I often bypass the elimination trial is by recommending a hydrolysed protein diet such as Hill's i/d. In these diets, the proteins are broken down, so there is minimal chance of them causing an allergy. This would have to be prescribed by a veterinarian though. It's actually best to consult with your vet before pursuing a diet change, because they can help to ensure the right diagnosis is made and that you are not doing anything that may be potentially harmful for Jake. Hi! I have a 2-year-old gsd. I wanted to start her on glucosamine chews, however I’m not sure which ones are the best because theres’s a lot marketed as “vet recommended”. She is also allergic to all poultry, seashells, coconuts, pork/ham, and lamb.
Dasuquin may work for Sable. I'd check that out! Cosequin has glucosamine derived from shellfish. You said she is allergic to seashells, but did you mean shellfish? If you meant shellfish, then Cosequin won't be good for her.

Poor Wheezy, she looks very uncomfortable and at risk of generating significant skin injury and additional complications. I recommend skin scrapes or a biopsy if not performed so fr in order to rule out medical causes such as mites or infections. If negative, a hydrolysed diet such as royal canin anallergenic should be fed with no treats/flavored tablets etc for a minimum of 8 weeks in order to determine the contribution of food sensitivities to her discomfort. IF she does not show complete resolution of her signs you should consider prescription anti-allergy medications. Rigorous flea prevention is important in such cases also as even a single flea bite will often trigger severe itching in sensitive dogs.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Unfortunately, Nikki's itching is more likely to be related to environmental allergies than food allergies. Environmental allergies are usually to things like grass, pollen, trees, etc - all the same stuff humans are allergic to. And these allergies can appear at any age. If benedryl helps, it is considered quite safe to use long term for most dogs (talk with your vet first). If you are trying to avoid medicaitons and side effects, talk with your vet about the cytopoint injection. It is not a medication or drug- it is actually just a protein that blocks the itch receptor and is considered very safe. It lasts 1-2 months in most dogs. If it works for Nikki, it also shows that her allergies are environmental in nature (that shot does not work well for food allergies). There are also many great sprays, mousses, and foot soaks that may help - talk to your vet about these options. Getting back to the food situation, if you have any concerns about the safety

My 3yr old Male shih tzu/dauschund mix was diagnosed with food allergies but NOTHING seems to work for very long. Our vet advised a single protein, single carb diet. Any other suggestions we can try?
Your veterinarian is right. You will actually have to do trials. Try feeding a single carb (eg potato) with a single protein (e.g. duck or deer or fish). for three to four weeks. If that does not work replace the protein with another one, feed for three to four weeks, etc. It is a long process of finding out what works and what does not. Leave out all treats, do not let him eat any human food, steal cat food, etc. No rawhide treats or toys either!. If after your trials you still have not found a food that will work you can try special commercial hypo-allergenic food or hydrolysed protein prescription diet from Hill's or Royal Canine. Unfortunately this is a very frustrating disease.

Looking for a good chew toy for Jasper,we were giving him the purina dental chewz but now it seems like he is eating them to fast,tried a few different ones but don't seem to last,any suggestions?
To keep dogs entertained for a longer period of time, I like to feed dehydrated chews. My largest dogs prefers bully sticks (https://www.bestbullysticks.com/4-inch-odor-free-bully-sticks) and my smaller dog loves dehydrated fish skins (https://www.thehonestkitchen.com/beams). They also like dehydrated sweet potato chews like Sam's Yams, but I might do something smaller for Jasper like their Bichon Fries (https://www.frontporchpets.com/sam-s-yams-bichon-fries-new-larger-size-12-5-oz.html). There are a large number of dehydrated chews on the market now, so you might ask at your local pet store to see if they have any suggestions for you. Please let me know if that was helpful. Hi there. With diabetic dogs, diet doesn't actually make a huge difference - there is no evidence that feeding a particular diet, or avoiding a particular type of treat, is necessary to control their blood sugar. What's most important is that you stay fairly consistent about what you feed her (and how much), and that you give her insulin injections as directed by your veterinarian. So it's unlikely that the starch chews will cause any significant problems with her diabetes. You could also consider using large, all-natural rawhide chews such as the ones from Raw Feeding Miami, bully sticks, or cow or pig's ears as treats for her to chew on.
