My dog ate a poisoned rat. Should I worry about secondary poisoning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 35 lbs

My 35 lb heeler ate a rat about 3 hours ago that had possibly died from poison. The poison contained broadifacoum. I did not see it but my husband did. Is he at risk for secondary poisoning? I’ve read conflicting statements.

Yes, Diesel is at risk from secondary poisoning from this. You need to take him into a vet immediately to get treated for rat bait poisoning. Do not wait until the morning, and this cannot be treated at home. This is a medical emergency, please take him into a vet now. I hope this helps!
