My bunny ate elastic string. What should I do and watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Male | unneutered

4 days ago our bunny got out of crate unsupervised. All seemed fine, nothing out of place. Today noticed a small piece of elastic string (that wraps & secures a folder) was chewed, half of it missing. Estimated the string was maye an inch to inch & half that he ingested. It happened 4 days ago & since he has been eating, drinking, urinating, & having normal bowel movements & acting himself. What should I do, what signs do I keep look out for incase of potential issues, how long to monitor him?

The digestive system of rabbits moves food through it pretty quick, so if you haven't noticed anything wrong in the past 4 days then Buggy is likely fine. Of course, this cannot be confirmed 100% without a physical exam. Monitor for a decrease or loss of appetite, a decrease or absence of stool production and lethargy. These symptoms should be addressed immediately by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating rabbits. Increase the amount of timothy hay being offered as well as the amount of exercise. Both should help push any remnants of string out of his system.
