My orphan kitten has bloody stool. How do I keep my other pets safe?

We have an orphan kitten we have brought home but we also have other pets and don’t want to put them at risk. He seems to be having stool issues with a little blood and have questions as to how to handle it

Intestinal worms are quite common in kittens, and this certainly could be the cause of Stella's stool issues with blood. Intestinal worms are contagious, so I would keep her separated from your other cats and dogs for now (not sure what you have sorry!). Make her an appointment with the vet for a health check, and the vet can deworming her as well discuss vaccines and flea treatments. Give a vet a call now to make an appointment. I hope this helps!

Hello and thank you for contacting Boop by Petco. First of all, you should separate the new kittens from your other cats as he may carry viral diseases or worms that can be dangerous to your cats. Presence of blood in stools and vomiting can be related to worms infestation but it also could be a sign of gastrointestinal infection. Please, offer Kai small portions of good quality food (kitten food or cooked lean meat) and plenty of water to drink. The worming medication should be repeated in 2 weeks time. However, if Kai continues to vomit and pass diarrhoea with blood, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment.

The may have died from an infection and dehydration since they had constant bloody liquid stools. Those kittens may have had weaker immune systems than the rest. Without actually doing some testing, it is impossible to know for sure. The best way to prevent the other kittens from catching what they had would be to disinfect everything, deworm the other kittens, and make sure they are vaccinated properly. If they start showing any signs of illness than they should be examined by a vet right away. Hope the rest of the kittens stay healthy!

My kitten has bloody stool, pot belly, and has been dewormed before I adopted her 3 days ago. 10/8 2nd dose Strongid.
The belly will take a little while to go down after they are dewormed, but if you just recently noticed that it was getting bigger, then it's more likely related to the infection causing the diarrhea. Blood in the stool indicates a more invasive infection, which can become a dire situation for kittens if not treated soon enough. There are also some scary diseases like panleukopenia that can start like this. For these reasons, I recommend taking Tess to a vet for an evaluation and treatment. If she was recently adopted, then the shelter may allow you to take her there for an evaluation by their veterinarian. For now, make sure she has plenty of water available and mix a little water in her food. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. I hope this helps and Tess gets better soon.

I would recommend taking your kitten in to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your kitten is most likely suffering from intestinal parasites, which can cause vomiting and diarrhea. Your vet will likely want to run a fecal examination and will deworm your kitten. It may also be time to start your cat vaccines as well. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. My kitten has blood in her stool, is slightly uncoordinated and isnt eating or playing much. I haven't changed her diet from the previous owner. She hasn't used the litter box much either.
The most common reason for a kitten/young cat to have diarrhea (especially with blood in it) is intestinal parasites, namely coccidia. I suggest you have your vet do a fecal test on her. Blood in the stool is very worrisome to owners and I understand that but if it is a one time occurrence I would not be overly concerned. The most common reason for this colonic irritation is internal parasites. I suggest you speak to your vet about deworming. The two common parasites to cause blood in stool is hookworms and coccidia both of which are treated with different dewormers. You should have your vet run a fecal test first to figure out if that is the underlying reason. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic and use it for at least 2 weeks. I recommend Fortiflora but any probiotic for cats should be OK (no human probiotics). It looks like Ollie might be having a partial rectal prolapse, which can happen with diarrhea from things like parasites or from constipation. The blood might be related to diarrhea or if it's a small amount it could be from the rectum and from irritation. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian right away given his age - if it is a small prolapse it could get worse quickly and require surgical repair. The vet can hopefully determine the underlying cause and offer treatment.

Hello, and congratulations on Poppy! Young kittens can have things like worms that may cause diarrhea, but other factors, like a diet change or stress, could also be the culprit. Bright red blood streaks in the stool is not entirely uncommon when animals have diarrhea as they sometimes strain to push out remaining soft stool, which can burst small blood vessels in the rectum. The blood itself is probably nothing to worry about unless is continues, but Poppy should be evaluated by a vet for the diarrhea. They will check a stool sample for parasites, like worms, and give her the proper treatment. While it is unlikely that you or your family will contract parasites from Poppy, it is always best practice to wash well after playing with her and after cleaning her litterbox until she has been dewormed in order to minimize the risk of transmission. I am sorry to hear about your kitty! With blood present I think it is time for a vet exam (and bring a stool sample along). We can have intestinal parasites that are not treated by dewormer (such as Coccidia and Giardia). We can also have things like colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, or food allergy cause these issues. The vet can examine your kitty and based on the exam and history make recommendations and possible test and treatment options.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I would not give the vaccine if Kitty isn’t feeling well. If she has an infectious disease the vaccine will not prevent it from getting worse. Bloody stool could be from a virus, a bacterial infection, a GI foreign body, or parasites. Even if you have dewormed her, not all dewormers get every parasite. If the bloody stool continues I would recommend borrowing money to have her seen by a vet. Good luck and kisses to Miss Kitty!
