My dog has vaginal discharge after spay surgery. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 28 lbs

My dog was spayed on Tuesday 9/8 and the incision I believe looks good but there’s been some vaginal discharge. She was not in heat when she was spayed. It was more the first night and following day and slowed a bit but now it’s steadily there every day. The adoption center where she was spayed isn’t responding to my calls/emails/voicemails and I am wondering if I should take her in. The photos attached are of her incision and her inside her onsie were we’re seeing the discharge.

Hi ! If Holly is well in herself, eating bright passing normal feaces and urine, I would not worry. A little bit of vaginal discharge is expected folllowing the surgery and should gradually decrease and disappear. It can take sometimes a couple of weeks for it to settle completely. The wound is also healing very well. I hope this helps ! Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach !
