My puppy's pupils are temporarily different sizes. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 9 week old Aussie-Shepherd Collie mix has eyes that are temporarily different sizes in the pupils. Yesterday it was the right eye, it went back to normal and today is the left eye that went back to normal after time. Should I be worried? Here is a picture of his eye with the pupil small and few minutes later

Hello. This might be a sphincter abnormality, which is the musculature that controls pupil size. We see this occasionally in some artic breeds, & most often they do outgrow it. But there are some other possible causes, including an inflammatory condition in the anterior chamber of the eye called uveitis, and, a possible disturbance in the pressures in the eye. So, it is best to have your veterinary check this out. She may recommend a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist, just to make sure. Have this done at your earliest convenience or when your puppy is due for his next set of puppy vaccinations. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
