Why is my dog throwing up yellow bile and having bloody, mucus poop?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Havanese | Male | neutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 17 lbs

Hi. My 4 year old male Havanese has been having some issues with throwing up yellow bile and also weird poop. We have taken him to the vet a few times and they don’t have an answer. They just send up away with some pills to help with nausea. His poop is what is worrying me. He had a very jelly like see through consistency one that they tested and said he’s fine but obviously it looked worrisome. It even had some fresh red blood in it. He now has loose stool with a lot of dark mucus in it.

It can be hard to work up these types of chronic cases. Food allergies, IBD, and intestinal parasites would be common. Empirical deworming and treating for Giardia is often done, as well as sending out blood for a GI panel. A good trial with a prescription hypoallergenic dog food may also be indicated. Adding in pet probiotics is always a good idea.
