My young foster puppy bit me. Should I get a rabies vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund (Miniature Smooth Haired) | Female

I got scrapped and broke skin with a little bleeding (similar to a pin prick) by a 2 month old puppy that had just been vaccinated on the same day as the wound. The puppy was born in foster care. Should I get a rabies vaccine? I had a tetanus shot 3 years ago. Thanks!

Hello. If the puppy was perfectly healthy, not acting sick at all, especially anything that resembled strange neurological behavior, then no. Plus, since the puppy was born in foster care, unless there was a chance it was previously bitten by a wild animal, there is no way it could have contracted rabies. You are fine & please do not worry. Keep the area clean & dry & if any redness or swelling develops, please see your physician. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
