My senior dog coughs white foam. Is it allergies? When to call vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

My 11 year old yorkipoo hAs been coughing for about a week. Sometimes a bit of white foam liquid comes up. Thinking it could be allergies I gave him half of a benedryl which helps until it wears off. What could this be? Should we see an emergency vet?

If the benadryl is helping, it could be allergy related, however since this has been ongoing a week, I would still schedule a vet visit for Chip with your regular vet to rule out other issues such as heart or lung disease, parasites, respiratory illnesses, or other potential causes, especially since he is a senior pet. If his coughing is very bad to the point he can't breathe, is turning blue or pale, or seems in distress, then seeking emergency care is best.
