My senior dog coughs white foam. Is it allergies? When to call vet?

My 11 year old yorkipoo hAs been coughing for about a week. Sometimes a bit of white foam liquid comes up. Thinking it could be allergies I gave him half of a benedryl which helps until it wears off. What could this be? Should we see an emergency vet? Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Male | neutered | 11 years and 8 months old | 10 lbs

If the benadryl is helping, it could be allergy related, however since this has been ongoing a week, I would still schedule a vet visit for Chip with your regular vet to rule out other issues such as heart or lung disease, parasites, respiratory illnesses, or other potential causes, especially since he is a senior pet. If his coughing is very bad to the point he can't breathe, is turning blue or pale, or seems in distress, then seeking emergency care is best.
