Why is my dog licking leg & breathing fast after neuter collar off?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | neutered | 18 lbs

My dog had castration 2 week ago and we just removed the collar. He has been licking his front leg for an hour, nd now his breath is fast... he got exhausted and about to nap. Is it normal?

Is this the leg where the catheter was? Sometimes the catheter can bother them and make them lick excessively at this area. If that is the case I would put the ecollar back on him and have the veterinarian take a look at him. If it is not from the catheter I would have your veterinarian look at his fur to make sure he is ok. Licking can be from pain, irritation, boredom, allergies, etc. There are many different causes. The concern is if he continues to lick it can lead to other issues. If he continues to lick he can create a hotspot (localized infection) and a granuloma where he is licking. If he rests now and wakes up and doesn't bother with the area, I would just monitor him. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
