What health risks adopting a 3-year-old unspayed former breeder dog?

I am considering adopting a dog that has been bred should I be concerned about any special issues or health concerns longer term. She is about to be 3 and is in good health, well socialized and living in home with a small family AKC certified breeder

French Bulldogs are so cute! Given that she is three and is still unspayed, the biggest health risks are a pyometra and mammary tumors. Spaying her when you get her will take away the risk of a pyometra, but she will still have a 25% chance of developing mammary tumors during her lifetime. In dogs, 50% of mammary tumors are malignant, so it's important to get any lumps checked out right away that may develop on her belly. Other than that, excluding the heath risks that are common with the breed, there are no additional risks to adopting a dog who has been bred. I hope this helps!

French bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning that their muzzle is shorter than a normal dog. This does pose some anesthetic risk but for the most part, these pets do fine under anesthesia with appropriate precautions. I do agree with your veterinarian that having her spayed is a good idea. I recommend to look for veterinarian who has experience and is comfortable with sedating brachycephalic dogs. If you notice that she is a noisy breather, you may talk to the veterinarian in advance about repairing any stenotic nares or elongated soft palate during the procedure. These conditions are very common in French bulldogs. If she’s already going to be sedated for a spay, then that would be a good time to repair these other abnormalities if the doctor thinks it’s necessary. The two most common problems I would worry about are mammary tumors, which are more common the more frequently a dog goes through heat cycles, and pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus and occurs in dogs that are not spayed. Good luck on your project and let me know if this was helpful!

What are the negatives of having an unspayed female dog (other than bleeding) ? Thanks for the help
Hi again! Thanks for your question. Negatives of having an unsprayed female (intact female) are uterine infections (pyometra) which can be fatal, mammary cancers, ovarian tumors, and a shorter life span because of the development of these issues. One other negative is an undesired pregnancy. Hope this helps!

Fiffy is a bit old are there any risks to spaying her ? I found her on the street so I wasn't able to spay her younger as I just met her not long ago.
Hello. It is nice that Fiffy now has a home with someone so caring. Risks of spaying include risk of anaesthesia, risks of infection and wound break-down after surgery, as well as bleeding in surgery. Risks of not spaying Fiffy include increased risks of cancers, HIGH RISK of pyometra (a life-threatening infection of the uterus that requires emergency surgery to correct), and pregnancy (which in an older dog can be life-threatening). I feel that unless there are medical conditions determined on physical exam prior to surgery that would suggest that she is unstable for anaesthesia, spaying her is less risky than waiting and possibly having an emergency surgery later on. Have a veterinarian perform a complete physical examination on Fiffy, and bloodwork prior to surgery to rule out any underlying disease, and if that is all normal I would recommend having Fiffy spayed.

There are benefits to spaying and also risks. I am going to give you both so you can make an informed decision: Major Benefits Prevent estrus and unwanted pregnancy Decrease risk for mammary tumors Risks Obesity (increased food intake) Urinary incontinence Increased risk for*: • Certain neoplastic diseases in certain breeds • Certain joint diseases in certain breeds Surgical complications (e.g., hemorrhage, incisional complications) are more common in larger dogs. So, considering the increased risk for mammary tumors in later life, it may be advisable to have her spayed as soon as possible, ie before the second heat. Generally you can have your dog spayed anytime in her life.

I want to breed my dog with my neighbour's dog, what are the risk for my dog?
You don't mention whether your dog is a male or female, but I'll try to address both sexes. With any breeding, there is a risk of disease transmission. Brucellosis is the most commonly transmitted infectious disease between dogs in most areas but there is also a type of transmissible cancer that can be exchanged through breeding. You give your location as Canada, and I would say that TVT (Transmissible Venereal Tumor) is relatively rare there, but it is quite common in other parts of the world. If your dog is a male, there are likely few other risks to breeding. Most of the serious risks manifest during pregnancy and especially delivery, when the possibility of dystocia, or inability to give birth (a number of causes) may occur. In these cases the life of the female can be in serious danger without surgical intervention (C-section). Finally, in general, I'd ask that you really consider whether you feel that your dog and the proposed partner would produce puppies of sound genetics.Ty

Hello and thanks for using Boop by Petco! The more heat cycles a dog goes through the more likely they are to develop mammary (breast cancer). At Fifi's age there may be less of a reduction in risk by spaying her now but it is still probably worth spaying her. By spaying Fido you will also eliminate the risk that she develops a life threatening uterine infection called a pyometra. That in itself is enough to warrant spaying at this time. Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. If Love Love is mated to a male dog and becomes pregnant, she will be pregnant for about 63 days. As long as she remains healthy, she will have puppies after this time. Not spaying your female dog increases the risk of pyometra, which is an infected uterus, which is a life-threatening emergency. There can also be issues at the time of birthing, such as dystocia, which is when a puppy gets stuck in the birth canal and cannot get out. This is also a surgical emergency. Intact (unspayed) female dogs are also at increased risk of mammary or breast cancer, which can be malignant and aggressive. I hope you will consider having Love Love spayed to eliminate these risks. There are also many dogs in shelters that are available for adoption, so adding more puppies to the world takes a home away from one of the dogs already in an animal shelter. I hope this is helpful!

From what I can see in the photos it looks like normal teats of a dog that has multiple litters. That being said, when they get cancers in the mammary glands they are up next to the body so without feeling her I cannot tell you if there are any tumors present. I suggest you have her examined by a vet before you adopt her. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

While any anesthesia carries a risk, spaying is generally a very safe procedure. The risks of anesthesia increase as a dog ages (I'm specifically referencing senior dogs like 10 years and older), but there are few risks for a young and healthy puppy. Your vet is right she could be ill in the future if you don't spay her. Not spaying her leaves her at risk of developing a pyometra in the future. This is an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment, and spaying the dog is part of the treatment of a pyometra. That surgery is high risk due to the severity of the illness in the dog from the infection, and it costs thousands to perform. In addition, dogs who are spayed are at an increased risk of developing mammary tumors. Of these mammary tumors, 50% of them are malignant. For her health, it is best to spay her now. I would speak with your vet about getting it done. I hope this helps!
