My cat's skin tore during mat removal. Is the wound healing okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Ragdoll | Male | neutered | 10 years and 10 months old | 13 lbs

my sister attempted to cut a mat from my cat and it looks like a thin layer of skin cam off as well. There is no bleeding and his behavior hasn't changed nor his eating/ washroom habits. It has been 4 days and the wound is now dried up. Please see photo. (The yell ow stain is from NaturPet healing spray)

Ouch! That looks like a large bit of skin was taken. It if is larger than 2-3 inches in size, I would have your vet suture it with a drain to keep it from getting infected. If it's smaller than that, keeping the area clean and dry and keeping Leroy from licking it is best to prevent infection. Signs of an infection starting include oozing or debris, swelling, pain, or heat/swelling around the area, which needs to be treated with antibiotics from your vet.
