Adopting a dog recovered from lepto: permanent organ damage risk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 17 lbs

Potentially adopting a dog in the foster care of a nonprofit who has recovered from leptospirosis. She is 4 months old and never had symptoms besides thirst and urination. Unsure of time infectedShe has reacted well to antibiotic treatment and has had tests performed for liver and kidney function and levels were shown to be normal. Wondering what may be the potential that she has sustained permanent liver and/or kidney damage with a case that wasn’t very serious and has been treated? Thank you.

If her lover and kidney values and urinalysis are normal, then I don’t think there will be any long-term effects and I would hesitate to adopt her! Make sure to keep her current on all vaccinations, including Lepto since she could get it again.
