What is this on my female dog’s genital area? It looks sort of like a zit or pimple. She has been licking the area frequently. The photo was taken last night, it now appears to have drained and is just a reddish dot. Thank you.

If it was draining it was possible it is an abscess (infection) or cyst/blister. I would keep Ellie from licking it as that can cause secondary infection and further irritation. Once she has stopped licking it, I would then keep the area clean and dry and if the spot remains, worsens, or changes in appearance, have it looked at by a vet in person right away.

Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). First of all you are going to be ok as blood does not carry any infection that can be transmitted to you. Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause better, this presentation could be due to a trauma (previous manipulation) or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
