My hamster has spots on his back and is acting lethargic. Is he okay?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Male | 1 year and 7 months old | 0.25 lbs

My teddy bear hamster has two discolored spots on his back that aren't raised and I'm worried because he seems to be less energetic than usual. I noticed them tuesday and about a week ago he jumped out of my hands to the top rack of our dishwasher and I don't know if that's related.

Hello. You are looking at the normal scent glands found on all hamsters. Nothing to worry about. If Gert continues to be lethargic, or develops any sneezing, coughing, or wheezing, then I would be concerned about a respiratory infection & he should see a veterinarian. But the spots you are seeing are perfectly normal. Thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
